Morbid Angel
Pete: Are we going to talk about the new record?
Justin: I don’t have it.
Pete: That’s what I wanted to talk about.
Justin: Sorry. Do you believe your music is DEATH metal?
Pete: That’s what the critics call it. We just write fast, intense , catchy and brutal songs.
Justin: What has changed about the band since the release of the last album?
Pete: The band has never been this strong. There were a lot of personal differences before. In the past the band wasn’t together as a unit. The old songs had NO meaning. I wasn’t part of David’s philosophy and thoughts.
Justin: Who’s your favorite Willy Wonka Character?
Pete: Who is that?
Justin: Do you believe in Jesus Christ?
Pete: God is God. God is the universe.
Justin: Do you watch the Care Bears?
Pete: I think I’ve watched them here and there. There are so many bear catoons lately. I watched speed Racer. I’m still a kid my mind thinks like a kid.
Justin: How long has Morbid Angel been together?
Pete: I’ve been in the band since 1988.
Justin: Why did David Vincent leave the band?
Pete: David just quit the band. He wasn’t feeling the music. Everything was out of control.
Justin: Do you think that metal will make a comeback?
Pete: Hopefully! A lot of people have said that metal has been dead for the past year. We’re just gonna keep doing it.
Justin: What are the primary philosophies of Morbid Angel?
Pete: The Living Continuum. The philosophy of creating and making something on your own. It takes a mind and a thought, which are divided, into opposites. There are positives and negatives. This band is all about setting new standards and making things happen beyond the human mind. I just know how much believing in myself it takes in order for me to find the energy level to play these songs.
Justin: what language do you guys sing in?
Pete: Sumerian. Sumeria was one fo the first ancient civilizations. They were the first civilization to set their own civilization to set their own standards. Sumerians believe that God is the whole universe.
Justin: What does the Sumerian phrase “Bill or Sag” mean?
Pete: “Bill or Sag” is the great theory of the lion head. Giant fucking flames.
Justin: What are your thoughts on the government subsidizing of shopping malls.
Pete: NO thoughts at all. I don’t quite understand you . Can you explain?
Justin: Next question. Do you guys hate people?
Pete: No, why should I hate people? More people hate us than we hate people.
Justin: Have you ever heard any reports of kids killing others or themselves as a result of listening to Morbid Angel?
Pete: No, because our music doesn’t provoke people to kill. At least not that I know of.
Justin: Any last words or advice.
Pete: Do whatever you want. Do something that comes form your heart and your soul. Believe in yourself. Don’t follow in anyone else’s trains. No matter if you get accepted be yourself and be yourself. Be as original as possible. Everybody has a divine spark of potential inside.
I’d like to thank Scott Shevak for fixing me up with this interview and Liz, and Pete.
