Furious George
The following interview took place before the Furious George show with Snatch, Blanks 77, and Against All Authority at the First Unitarian Church on March 20. Before the show, Justin, Brian, Elysa, Jackie, Joe to Go, and I met up with George from Furious George. We were in this weird kitchen type room with these vegetables all around us. The atmosphere and George himself made this a rather usual yet entertaining interview. - Laura

Justin: Who’s your favorite Willy Wonka character?

George: Between Veruca Salt-oh no, cause of the band. Oh Mike TV was great! I mean if I was that little and mom put me in her purse, I’d say, “what the fuck is this tampon thing? What the hell is this?”

Justin: So can you spell your name?

George: Umm..S-A-T-A-N

Justin: And where are you form S-A-T-A-N?

George: H-A-D-E-S. My name is George Tabb, T-A-B-B, and I’m from Brooklyn New York.

Justin: How long have you been in the scene?

George: That’s a bad question. Umm...I started listening to punk rock about three years ago and I started my first band at the same time. (Laughter)

JoeToGo: what was your first band?

George: Roach Motel. And that was uhh...three years ago.

Brian: Do you guys drink at all George?

George: I used to drink until last week. I drank a lot. Then my doctor told me I had to stop drinking because my pancreas and liver need to heal. He said “no more 100 drinks a week, ya gotta slow it down”.

Brian: Forever?

George: Forever. Well that’s bullshit. I said I still smoke crack. (This is interrupted by an obnoxious discussion about drugs that you really wouldn’t be interested in)

Justin: How are you involved with Lookout! Records besides with your band? George: My band is not on Lookout! Records. When Sony bought them out we had to drop off the label for out credibility purpose. What happened was Lyle sold the label to Sony Records and they took over. Don’t tell anybody that. But if you look at distribution and shit, if you look at the records closely they have the Sony logo on it. They do. They don’t let it be advertised so they have credibility.

Brian: Like a hologram?

Justin: Or under a black light it shows up?

George: They are actually owned by Sony, for their credibility they’re afraid the punks will go crazy. Don’t release that information.

Justin: Are you kinda annoyed Sony picked them up?

George: No, I knda saw it comming when the Peeches signed to Mercury.

Justin: How old are you guys?

George: JoeToGo is 48, I’m 44.

Elysa: when you used to drink a lot were you smashed during your shows?

George: Yeah! Hell yeah!

Elysa: So what is it like now? Is it different?

George: It’s only been a couple of weeks.

Elysa: How about your first show sober?

George: I did my first sober show years ago. It was all right. Sometimes I do sober shows.

Elysa: do you get more nervous?

George: I get more bored. Oh God, I’m up here playing and I’m not wasted, I’d much rather be wasted. I should be at home playing my Playstation or playing with my little puppy...

Justin: Do you have a job?

Georoge: Yeah. I’m a writer. I write for magazines. I write for New York Press newspaper.

Elysa: What kind of stuff do you write?

George: Mostly funny stuff, humorous stuff for magazines.

Justin: Any new records coming out?

George: We have a record on Recess right now. Our label Recess is the best label in the whole world cause they’re not bought out by Sony. They’re actually bought out by Columbia, which is a better company.

Elysa: Did you have any copyright problems because of the monkey?

George: We registered the name Furious George. But we had to wait a certain period for the trademark . We were suppose to have it last month. I have received two letters in a one-month’s period form the US copyright office. The Curious George people are protesting.

Elysa: Are you changing the logo?

George: They can suck my dick cause I’m not changing anything. And here’s what I’ll say when I get to court. They’ll say “You can’t use the Furious George”, I’ll say “My name is George and I’m a furious guy.” They’ll say “that monkey is Curious George!” I’ll say “Curious George does not wear a leather jacket and sunglasses.” They’ll say “That’s the same monkey!”, here’s my defense, “Are you saying all monkeys look alike? That’s a racist thing to say!”

Justin: so who is “Betty Crocker Punk Rocker” about?

George: It’s about Julia Child. She’s really cool. Ya know what I really want to do Screeching Weasel’s Ramones album. That’d be great. Furious George does aScreeching Weasel’s Romones album. That’d be funny.

JoeToGo: What year did you graduate high school?

George: I never actually graduated. I got to college and halfway through my senior year my high school called me up . “you never finished, you still owe us one algebra course and one gym class.” so I never graduated. The punch line is, many, many years later I got the diploma in the mail. And it said that they heard I was a big writer and we’d like you to come to your...I’m not gonna tell you what year reunion...

All: Ohhh...

George: Fine! Twentieth year reunion. 79. So they send me the degree and ask me to be the keynote speaker. I said “Blow Me! You wouldn’t let me have the degree twenty years ago! Now that you have me the degree you think I wanna talk to you ?”

Justin: what’s your dogs name?

George: Scooter. He’s so cool! He’s a Yorkshire terrier.

Justin: I have a Yorkshire terrier too. Bronco!

George: Aren’t they cool doges. Such happy dogs.

Justin: Tell me anything about MRR. Any dirt?

George: No dirt. For all of MRR’s posturing and bullshit about major label vs indie label and DIY, it’s important for kids to hear about that. But you don’t have to do whatever MRR says. That’s my big difference with Tim. You don’t have to do what he says but having the ideas out there is very important. That’s probably why MRR is the most important fanzine ever. It exposes kids to new kinds of music that they otherwise wouldn’t hear. Although I don’t agree with a lot of its “ideas”, I agree that it’s a very important magazine and people shouldn’t slack it. Without it people right here wouldn’t be here.

Jackie: I’d be here.

George: No you wouldnt’. If MRR weren’t here you wouldn’t be here. You never would have heard of Screeching weasel, you never would have heard of Green Day, you never would have even have heard of punk rock. MRR supports Lookout! Lookout! Came from MRR. Tim O’Hannon opened up Gilman Street with the money from MRR and gave bands a chance to play. I wanna tell you how MRR is very important. It gave kids a chance to play. People formed their own bands cause Tim and MRR gave them the venue to play in and the ideas on how to start their own label. Although it’s ideas seem outdated or backwards, it created the scene that exists now. And when times change, which they are, and when bands like Mr. T Experience or Green Day even, don’t go selling a million albums anymore, there will be places for them to play cause things like MRR exist. And when punk rock dies down and it is no longer scene, when everyone goes and listens to the new raver or hip-hop shit, punk rock will still exist and MRR will still be leading the way to helping kids. Do It Yourself and creating a scene will give us all a chance to express ourselves and explain how alienated we are from our parents. This is very important.

Justin: Amen.

George: Amen.
